San Destin Recap (courtesy of Amy Hunt)

Race morning:  4:15 wake up call, coffee, gear check, and head out.
Transition opened at 5am and was quickly full of athletes getting set up.  Kat, Barb, and I were all on the same rack.  (The proximity to those two immediately made me feel fast!)   We headed out for a warm up swim
and quickly realized that it was pretty darn nice.  We discussed the thick seaweed and how we would be finding it in all kinds of interesting places later.
Given all of the rain lately, we really lucked out with near perfect race
weather.  Overcast skies, minimal wind, and “fair” water conditions made
for an awesome day.  I think everyone would agree that the water was nice
except for massive amounts of seaweed and numerous curious jellies.  The
biggest issue (to me) during the swim was the current.  The longest part of
the rectangular, ½ mile swim course was against the current.  Unless you
are Joey,  Allen or Barb, you probably noticed the current.  One other
observation is that they need much bigger buoys.  In my opinion, EVERY race needs bigger buoys.

It was a pretty long run from the shore to the timing mat to enter T1, but there
were a lot of folks cheering along the way.  A quick bit on 98 and then the
bike course was on 30A.  A few cars here and there but pretty open for the
most part.  This is a fast course with some small uphill on the way back.
All of the TTBs that I saw on the bike were looking strong.  Allen is
always recognizable because of his back wheel….and the fact that he is usually out front.  Kevin Self blew passed me at some point and shouted some type of encouragement.  He was tearing it up!  The 20 mile bike course was actually 19 something, but it was a great ride.  Jeremy Tanner had some
sort of spill but seemed to recover nicely.  It’s always a good day when
everyone comes in off the bike safely.

The run course is awesome at this race!  It is great being able to see other
team members and urge them on!  On my way out I saw Allen digging deep,
Barb looking lean and strong, Kat looking like she just had a baby….Oh wait!
That would be the norm for someone who gave birth seven weeks ago, and we all now that Kat is NOT normal.  Seriously, Kat looked amazing and super
human. Freak. Of. Nature.
Anyway, Missy, Kevin V., Kevin S., Mark, Paige, Jeremy, Mr. Barbara Kerby,
Ryker, Joey (the always polite, super fast teenager) and several others were all looking great on the run.  It is great to see our gear out there on the
course looking sharp.
Awards were presented by the pool.  Allen was 3rd overall, and Barb was
2nd overall!  Kat (aka: freak of nature) was first in 35-39, but was presented
the 2nd place medal.  When final results were posted, Kat was 1st
which moved me to third. I didn’t know this until half way home, but I’ll take
it.  Joey Pocreva was 10th overall and won his Age Group as did Terry
Bailey.  Mark Roberts was second for 35-39 males!  All TTBs posted
some awesome times and finished strong.  One highlight of the awards
ceremony was an appearance by sweet Abigail, Kat’s racing and training partner for approximately 9 months. 

This was my first trip to this race.  It was a GREAT one.  I never really
know if it is actually a good post-race party or if the TTBs are what make it so
much fun.  Good food, good beer (after Ryker fixed the broken keg), and
just plain cool people.  Add this one to the race calendar, folks!  It
is worth the trip.  One mistake I made was not staying the whole weekend.
I mean, it’s Destin!
